Health and Safety

The health and safety of our users is paramount. We are taking an active part in the creation of the new British standards for Parkour facilities, having a member of our team on the steering group contributing to their conception.

We acknowledge the difficulties of addressing safety issues by age criteria alone because the ability to handle risk is based on the individual users’ level of skills and not by age. Also, users other than the intended age range will almost certainly make use of the equipment.

Our equipment itself is based upon the competence of the user to determine what is within their capabilities, learning at lower levels and progressing.

We are also producing a living document - the ‘Freemove Parkour Design Risk Assessment Guidelines’. This design guide takes into account the foreseeable use of different ages and competencies, and using data from relevant legislation, standards and publications lower the foreseeable risks by utilising tried and tested control measures.

The design of each facility will incorporate where possible the latest revision of the proposed British Standard for Parkour and the Freemove Parkour Design Risk Assessment Guidelines.

There is no challenge without risk. Our spaces provide a wealth of opportunity for challenge and are a great way for people to learn fundamental risk management skills. Parkour is not a dangerous activity, to see a good example of the results of this method it is best to witness experienced practitioners training together.

Design Risk Assessment Guidelines

When Freemove started creating Parkour Training Facilities the British Standard for Parkour BS 10075 : 2012 was yet to be created therefore Freemove lead the way in developing safe practices for the design of Parkour Training Facilities.

We created the Design Risk Assessment guidelines as a way of monitoring and addressing potential areas of risk in the design of our Parkour Training Facilities as and when they happened in any design.

When introduced Freemove will use these guidelines alongside the British Standard for Parkour.

The recommendations are not a fully comprehensive answer. They are to be expanded when new issues come to light through expansion of designs.

Our after sales support service starts as soon as your Freemove Parkour site has been installed (or delivered in the case of Indoor Parkour).

We understand that many customers will require a post-installation inspection so we can organize a site specific risk assessment to occur before you take back responsibility for your site.

For every Parkour Training Facility we install we will provide a project pack with detailed information that includes the following:

Inspection and Maintenance

Freemove Parkour elements are usually maintenance-free.

Regular inspections will reduce the likelihood of accidents occurring and will extend the life of your Freemove Parkour area.

On completion of a new facility, a risk assessment should be carried out by a competent person to assess the safety of the installation.

Equipment and its components should be routinely inspected as follows:

a) Routine visual inspection

Routine visual inspection enables the identification of obvious hazards that can result from vandalism, use or weather conditions, e.g. Hazards such as broken parts or broken bottles.

For installations subject to heavy use or vandalism, daily inspection of this type can be necessary.

It is recommended that this inspection should be carried out on a monthly basis although the inspections should also be based on the frequency with which the facility is used.

b) Operational inspection

The operational inspection is a more detailed inspection to check the operation and stability of the equipment, especially for any wear.

It is recommended that this inspection should be carried out every 1 to 3 months although the inspections should also be based on the frequency with which the facility is used.

c) Annual main inspection

The annual main inspection is carried out to establish the overall level of safety of equipment, foundations and surfaces, including any changes made as a result of the assessment of safety measures, effects of weather, presence of rotting or corrosion, and any change in the level of safety of the equipment as a result of repairs made, or of added or replaced components.

It is recommended that this inspection should be carried out every 12 months by an authorised specialist (safety inspector / TÜV).

The issues mentioned below should be checked at the indicated regular interval.

Joints

If previous filled joints loosen completely, especially those in frequently used surfaces, they must be sealed again.

ROX structure

Colour differences are intended; minor cracks and salt efflorescence appear due to technological reasons and do not represent a safety risk

Steel bars and frames

Steel bars, frames and similar must be checked for stability and fastening.

Drainage

The drainage designated for the facility, if available, must be checked for functionality. Drains are to be cleaned regularly (e.g. leaves etc.).

Running surfaces and safety zones

Running surfaces and safety zones must be free of foreign material and debris, such as broken pieces of glass, gravel, leaves etc.

The running surfaces themselves must not have major falls or height offsets (< 5 mm).

The safety zones must be free of any obstacles. Benches and dustbins are considered as obstacles.

This does not include natural wear and tear and vandalism.

Due to the manufacturing process some small cracks and salt efflorescence may occur and should be expected.  These defects will not affect the performance of the element in any way.

Where applicable, colour differences and rough surface finish are intended.

Steel

All Freemove steel components come with a 5 year guarantee against material and manufacturing defects.

This does not include natural wear and tear and vandalism.

Nets

All Freemove nets and components come with a 5 year guarantee against material and manufacturing defects.

This does not include natural wear and tear and vandalism.

Fixings

All fixings come with a 5 year guarantee against material and manufacturing defects.

This does not include natural wear and tear and vandalism.

Exceptions

Joint Filling and painting is considered a maintenance issue therefore does not carry any form of guarantee against material, installation and manufacturing defects.
