Surfacing

For up to 3.0m high elements we recommend the following specifications of surfacing to comply with BS EN 1177 as long as it is not in conflict with the usability:

  • Eco Surface recycled bound rubber mulch with the relevant critical fall height.
  • Safergrass – Grass mats with the relevant critical fall height.

Other surfacing options that can be used but may be in conflict with the overall usability of the facility include:

  • Rubber crumb EPDM wetpour or similar product with relevant critical fall height.
  • Washed and tumbled pea gravel with a particle size of 6mm recommended minimum depth 300mm
  • Rubber tiles with relevant critical fall height.
  • Playgrade sand with relevant critical fall height, recommended minimum depth 400mm
  • Playgrade bark with relevant critical fall height, recommended minimum depth 300mm

Other surfacing options may be available to comply to BS EN 1177 For exact specification please refer to the relevant British Standards and individual supplier information.

Care should be taken when installing the elements to ensure the top of the elements are not higher than 3.0m above the proposed finished surface level.

The above surfacing information is to be used as a guideline only as there are many other forms of surfacing available that would attain the required critical fall heights.

As there is no specific standard for Parkour Training Facilities, the recommendations within BS EN 1176 and 1177 have been used as guidelines for all surfacing specifications and freespaces.

Where the surfacing may inhibit use of the Parkour Training Facility the area in question should be assessed in the risk assessment and auctioned as deemed necessary.

Ecosurface

Flame retardant, interlocking tiles to help create a vandal resistant surface.

Ecobond is a safe, continuous, seamless rubber surface which is hard wearing and can be laid over almost any type of existing ground without the need for foundations, and coupled with the natural looking aesthetics and colour options it is uniquely positioned to work in all year round in a huge variety of applications.

Ecobond is a combination of:

  • Ecosurface Rubber Mulch – A unique process that starts with recycling solid rubber* that otherwise would go to landfill; consistent control of this process provides us with a carefully blended flat shred, which is then coloured with our unique encapsulation process that not only gives us a natural looking surface, but one that is soft and flexible, long lasting and bonds perfectly.
  • Ecosurface Binder – A specially developed PU binder that is designed to work in cooperation with the shred size, the colouring process, and the requirements of a strong, yet flexible bond. This mixture is then simply spread out with a trowel.

As this bonded shred system is self supporting it requires no digging of foundations and the lack of large or heavy equipment makes it cost effective for even small or difficult access areas. Moreover it will easily work directly onto almost any existing ground conditions including grass or soil, old tiles or wet pour, crushed aggregate or concrete; it will follow the natural sloping contours of the ground and / or absorb undulations and can even be spread directly over tree roots and around plants.

We are pleased to confirm it has been safety and performance tested in accordance with all relevant British and European standards; including EN1177 & EN7188, and is therefore acceptable for use in all types of playgrounds, as well as sensitive ground and environmental settings.

Other Surfaces

EPDM Wetpour

Safety surfaces are a multi-component polyurethane and rubber composite which is formed ‘insitu’ by a chemical mixing, wetpouring, levelling, screeding and rolling process. An EPDM rubber crumb combined with a polyurethane binder to create a long lasting and aesthetically pleasing surface.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Modified) rubber granules form the wearing course of the surface. When used in the 2 layer system this wearing course is laid at a depth of 15mm. Rubber granules between 1mm and 4mm form a hard wearing, porous and slip resistant layer. EPDM granules are available in a variety of colours.

SBR (Styrene Butadiene Rubber) granules form the base layer of the surface and produce the absorbent properties of the system. 2mm – 6mm SBR granules are made from recycled truck tyres.

A polyurethane resin is used in varying quantities to bind the EPDM or SBR rubber granules together. All products are mixed on site and laid in-situ.

This safety surfacing provides a hard wearing, porous and absorbent surface ideal for laying on playgrounds, golf courses, equestrian centres, swimming pools and gyms.

All surfaces meet British and European safety standards and come with a 5 year warranty.

Other surfaces that can be used include Rubber Tiles, Woodchip, Ecomulch, Sand and Bark.
